Canarinho, our dear departed chess-playing friend, once tried his hand at being a nightlife entrepreneur. He opened a small bar on Marcondes Salgado Street, next to what's now the lottery shop in J\u00f3quei. It quickly became a hangout spot for the city's artistic crowd, staying open from late afternoon until the last customer left the following morning.<\/p>\n
It was the boozy paradise of the city's "R\u00ea Bordosas" and "Gerald\u00f5es," of misunderstood politicians, of family black sheep, of aspiring artists, of some Chileans, Argentinians, and Uruguayans fleeing the military dictatorships of the Triangle of the Condor, and, of course, of self-confessed drunks. There was also the crowd that worked the city's nightlife at the time: waiters, cooks, musicians who went there at the end of their shifts. Imagine the noise in the small bar with so many lively people, the racket caused by conversations, laughter, and insults occasionally hurled at any given table.<\/p>\n
But every morning a thin, shy-looking Black man would appear, quietly entering and sitting at the table of the first person who invited him. Most of the time, after his first sip, he'd head to the bathroom: "I'm going to take care of the diuretic factor," he'd always say. Soon enough, everyone would fall silent in the middle of the night. Not that his presence inspired respect or fear, or that he carried any weapon. In truth, he'd take a tiny sip of beer and play his saxophone. Respectful silence from everyone. Note by note, Bilontra's sax brought back memories of loves left in a corner of life, searching deep within the soul of each patron for a little bit of longing or sentiment.<\/p>\n
Bilo, while he lived, was the little bird that illuminated the musical nights of Ribeir\u00e3o Preto for many, many years. He played with all the great musicians from here and with those who passed through. His shy manner, his slender figure, his soft voice, and the "diuretic factor" of the Saxophone Wizard became part of the city's cultural history. And it was as a little bird, with a deep song on his tenor sax, that I met him. And it could only have been in the open nest of another little bird with a huge heart, the Canary.<\/p>\n
