Cinema has always looked to literature for themes and plots that have given rise to films of the most varied genres.
Many of these films achieved great audience success and/or became true classics.
The written word, a fundamental tool of Literature, perhaps demands more effort than the image to be understood by the receiver. But both, written word and image, require the human mind in the process of defining the discourse. And the word itself... “"imagine"” This already allows us to understand that all human thought is structured as an image. In other words, the world can only be thought about through images.
Following this preamble, we want to say that the films shown in the sessions CINEMA & LITERATURE They seek, in various ways, to account for this relationship between the written word and the image, in a process that scholars would call transcoding.

Based on a Cordel story by José Francisco Borges, a renowned folk artist, and produced entirely with original woodcuts by the author himself, this animated film tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a mysterious girl at a Carnival ball in the countryside, without knowing that this encounter would change his life forever.

The film's central theme is... The Slave Ship, an epic poem written in 1868 by Castro Alves (1847-1871), whose nickname was “"Ceceu".
A Examples of other works from the Romantic period, The Slave Ship It was conceived to be read in a public square. Idalina (played by actress Débora Duboc), the film's only fictional character, does so, dressed as a bride, in the present day, walking the streets of a large city in search of her groom.

Using text, narrative, and music by the poet, essayist, and translator Cláudio Willer (1940-2023), the film records impressions of Brazil in the first half of the 1980s, and can be defined as an intimate-patriotic drama.
The autonomous segments are glued together, always with some dissonance between sound and image.
Among the film's powerful dialogues, Aloysio Raulino says: “"Some dead people are too bothersome. Dead people that nobody wants to know about, nobody wants to see!"”

The film was made at a time when the memory of the writer, journalist and political activist Patrícia Galvão (1910-1962), known as Pagu, was being rediscovered; she had been, until then, in relative obscurity.
Hey Pagu, Hey! It follows Pagu's trajectory, offering a generous portrait of the author of Industrial park (Published in 1933, Pagu signed it with the pseudonym Mara Lobo), considered the first Brazilian proletarian novel.
